Overtone

A frequency component of a sound that lies above the fundamental frequency. Overtones are part of the harmonic series but do not include the fundamental itself. For example:

  • The 1st overtone corresponds to the 2nd harmonic.
  • The 2nd overtone corresponds to the 3rd harmonic, and so on.

Overtones contribute to the timbre of a sound, shaping its unique character. In musical instruments, overtones typically align with harmonics, but in some cases, such as bells or cymbals, they may include inharmonic frequencies, adding complexity or dissonance to the tone.
